LET'S MAKE A MOVIE
10 easy steps on how to make a low-budget or no-budget Christian short Movie by Norton Rodriguez
This God given article will also work on feature films and documentaries.
The LET'S MAKE A MOVIE article was created for Christian Filmmakers; to motivate the film making desire God has placed in your heart and to help you get started, right now, not tomorrow, not the next day...but TODAY! God is a now God and when He gives you a desire to do something, it's so you can start NOW! How long will you wait? How long says the Lord? God has already provided you with everything you need to succeed on this earth... the breath of life! There are two ways to jump start a career as a Christian film maker, one, is by going the film school route, and the other, by walking by faith and starting on your own…step by step until you become a film maker. This is the route I took in 1992 and I've seen many Christian filmmakers also start this way... by faith. Producing a short movie is a great way to start. A short movie gives you the opportunity to learn and practice your movie-making-skills on a lower scale. The making of a short film teaches you the basics of film making. Many big time film makers in Hollywood started their careers making short-films. Steven Spielberg used his "silent" 16mm short film Amblim (1967) to get his big break in Hollywood, and George Lucas’s USC thesis film, THX 1138 (1971), perked the interest of Warner Brothers and was made into a feature and the rest is history. Bottom line, everyone starts with a smaller project first, then as they grow in talent and wisdom...they move on to bigger and greater projects. Christian short movies are like modern video tracts and they can be used to touch the unsaved as well as the saved. Bellow, I’ve listed 10 easy steps on how to produce your first Christian short movie by faith and without any funds. The Calling Before we start, I know there are many Christians out there who are not sure of their calling and they have many doubts about being called to work in the Christian film or TV ministry. We know because we receive many e-mails each year from Christians who know that God has called them to make a movie...but at the same time, they are not sure. So, we would like to clarify this for you once and for all. The Creative Seed of God Remember that everything in life starts with a seed and God is the seed Creator and Provider. Before we are born, God plants a seed in us of things which we will like and will become in this world. Now, knowing that God is a good God, when we like something that it's good in the eyes of God, then we can rest assured that God planted that desire in our hearts. So if you feel a desire in your heart about making movies for God....guess who placed it there? Yes...God did. Why do you think there are people who like to be doctors, police officers, fire fighters, or film makers.... it's because these individuals had a desire from childhood to be doctors, police officers, or movie makers, etc. So why does God plants the desire in our hearts (many times from childhood, other times he changes our course in life) to be somebody or to do something? The answer is simple. So we may become exactly that which He has created us to be. God is so cool, because first he plants the seed (the desire) in us and then he waters it by helping you bring forth (spring into action) those same desires we have in our hearts. The Bible says it this way... Psalms 37:4 - Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. God is a good God. If you have never put him to the test... I have. And He has never failed me and I know that He never will. God wants to bless your dreams and your visions and he does this by first, planting the desire in you and then He motivates and propels you to action by way of the same seed or desire already planted in your heart. In other words, if there is no seed, there can be no desire. And if you have a desire but have no motivation then the enemy must be trying to steal your seed. In such case, you need to seek the Lord in a deeper more serious way because in the Lord's presence the enemy has no hold (or say). Don't let the enemy torment you or confuse about your gift and talents any longer. The Bible says that Satan is the author of confusion and he is also called the father of lies. So believe God and don't listen to the enemy. If you have a desire in your heart for making films for God, be sure this desire doesn't come from the enemy. Is the other way around, the enemy will NEVER tell you to do anything for God. So, if you do have a feeling or desire to make films for God, then do it! because this desire is of God.. Why I know this? Just look at what the Movie and TV Industry is doing with the talents and gifts (the seeds) the Lord has given them. God doesn't like it because they are not producing "good fruit". This is why He is calling people just like you and me to make a difference and to change the world one film at a time. Movie Making is one of the most powerful media in the world, Television and the Internet is first because they have the ability to send audio/visual information around the world within seconds. While movies take years to produce from script to screen. Nevertheless, a film or videol "story" has the potential to travel the world through movie theaters, Cable TV, Satellite, DVD, Internet, and soon in a cell-phone near you. My Testimony In 1998, After 15 years of working in the secular film and television industry the Lord place in my heart the desire to stop working for the secular market and to work for His Kingdom instead. I didn't know at the time what that meant, but I did something right.... I trusted Him. In just a few years, He turned my life and my entire Film Production company around, at the time, everyone new me as NORTON FILMS, Inc. but God turned it into: THE GOD OF MOSES ENTERTAINMENT, INC. www.TheGodofmoses.com Again at the time, I didn't understand it and to be honest I didn't like the name at all. I was happy doing what I was doing, doing my own thing. But God had other plans and today we are happy to report that we are working on a full time basis for the Lord, making all kinds of films, Videos, and TV productions, some with funds and others without it. And to be honest, the ones without funds tend to be more fun at times. So we are just happy doing God's Ministry. In our company God is the Producer and Director of all our films. I can tell you from experience that seeking and trusting in God and walking by faith is the greatest thing anyone can ever do. Because when we do, God will eventually reveal to us that we were never alone, that we never walked without a safety net, and that we always had a host of warring angels at our command to do all things for Christ. The truth is that God's goal is to walk with you and me just as He once walked with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Today, thanks to Jesus Christ we have access to the same God that walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden. What an awesome privilege that is. In fact, if you are breathing today, you are among the most privileged generations ever. "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." Do you believe it? I did. I guess I have seen what Moses most have seen, yet in a different light and perhaps not as dramatic as in the time of Moses, but just as powerful because He is the same Great I AM. There is nothing in Heaven or Earth than can stop God's awesome power, mercy and Love he has for you. The Lord knew you would be reading this article today, because He is the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end... and He knows it all. God wants you to know that you can do ALL things through Him, because it is He who empowers you to succeed. The Lord has blessed us way beyond our wildest dreams and I'm not just talking about finances, God is beyond money. If you want to succeed for God, you must stop worrying or seeking after money, only because that's exactly what the world constantly seeks after for. While the world seeks for money on a daily basis, we should be seeking God instead on a daily basis. Money is not evil, but money is the world's Idol. When you worry about money or the lack of it you are making money your idol and God doesn't like idols. I like the prosperity thinking pastors but sometimes you have to know where to draw the line. I rather hear a pastor preach that "When you have HIM (our Lord) you will never lack anything." And that's the truth. God can bring you wealth without money. God can do anything. Of course money is not a bad thing and God knows it. The problem is seeking after money instead of seeking He who is the creator of wealth in the first place. I also believe God doesn't want us to be poor, but He does want us to work hard and to conquer even when we are in the lacking stage. God doesn't like wimps, he wants us to be like Abraham, David, Moses, Esther, Paul, The lady with the issue of blood, or like Jesus Christ.. These were men and women of valor... who refused to give up in life. Through the years, the Lord has revealed to us several very important things on how to succeed for Him. First, God uses our lacking stage both to train us and test us (I call it the wilderness stage). That's why we should never complain, if we keep complaining to God that shows him our of lack of wisdom or training. In the wilderness, the Lord tests us to see what we are truly made of before He can pour out His blessings upon our lives. Secondly, our attitude in our time of lacking will determine the speed of how fast or how slow we'll move into our Promised Land or to our next level (this was also the case with the Israelites in the desert, and trust me, you don't want to spend 40 years in the wilderness.) And finally, the Good News... God has a promised Land from all of us (a plan for everyone who trusts in Him, believes and follow His ways). This was also true for the Israelites. If you study Moses, you will soon find out that The Negative Wilderness experience was only a testing ground as to who would cross to the Promise Land and who would not. Christianity is not for wimps!
I believe the Lord took the children of Israel to the middle of the desert so that they would have no other alternative than to seek the Lord and only be dependent of Him. The Bible calls this "separation". God often separate us from the world to himself. This is why at times you will feel that God is calling you to leave something else behind. Sometimes we have to separate from people (but never a marriage), co-workers, things, places, etc. (usually things that are not aligned with His Word.) God is our only provider, and we can only find Him when we've left everything else behind (specially our own self). If we don't loose site of self, we can't truly find HIM or receive the fullness of His purpose for us.
That's why, when we find God, we become less, so that He may become greater in us. Bottom line... it's all about HIM and nothing about us. That's the truth and the hardest part to accept in Christianity or at least the true Christianity. But the reality is that if we (self) get in the way, we lose it all. If we become a movie maker and Jesus is not 100% in us, we will tend to make films out of our own flesh (desires) and God knows it. That's why when HE calls us, He first separates us to himself, to teach us HIS ways an His vision. Remember the prayer, "...not my will Lord, but your will be done..." well as a Christian filmmaker, it also applies to us:
"Not my films Lord, but let your films be done."
This prayer is what separates Christian Filmmakers from the average filmmaker. Pride has no room or place in the Kingdom of God, so if you struggle with this prayer; it means that you are not Kingdom ready. Sorry, but that's the truth. The Lord gave his ALL for us; Jesus Christ. So we should be able to give Him OUR all... including our films. That's why when I hear a Christian Movie Maker talk about making family films, I know they are not ready. God is not looking just to entertain the family, God is interested in changing the family to himself. If you do not believe me, answer this question for me:
If Peter or Paul would have been filmmakers today, what kinds of films would they be making?
A. Family films B. Christian films I don't know what your answer may be, but my answer is B. Because I have read and studied Peter's and Paul's writings and we can easily tell without a shadow of a doubt that these men all they talked about was about our Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, God is looking for faithful servants (not wimps, but kings) who He can trust and pour out the fullness of His Glory....His total blessings. The truth is that we are more than servants, we are sons of God, we are family. This is why the Israelites were called The Children of God; our Lord Jesus Christ came to give us the fullness of that right! A working God God is also a working God. If you search the Bible for the word "WORK" you will soon come across the following scriptures: Genesis 2:2 - And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. John 5:17 - But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working still, and I am working." These scriptures clearly reveal to us that God is a working God. God is showing us that before anybody else worked, He worked... and He made things happen. And that my friends is what we have missed in the past. When God wants something done, he is willing to do it SIX days a week (resting only on the seventh). So, how are we to succeed? #1. God wants us to walk totally by faith in our times of lack and throughout our life, we are to seek Him 24/7, #2. We are to work hard towards the vision that God has given us 24/6... resting 1 Day whether we have the money or not (If we put God first, money should never be an issue). Also, working hard doesn't mean to leave family behind or sacrifice the family. We all need to keep a healthy balance between God, our work, our ministry and our family. Never sacrifice your family for work. #3. Stay focused, persevere and don't look back, move forward towards God's vision against all the odds. If we put God first in everything we do all the obstacles in your life, work and ministry will crumble before your very eyes in do time and season. If you do these three things above, I assure you that God will bless you beyond your wildest dreams. Yes, there is a time to wait on God too, and this of course is not a magic formula and God is not a Genie either. But when God speaks, like He has spoken to us and now to you... It's time to take action and it's time to get serious! But you may say, Lord I have this or that disability.... wait, stop right there. God chose Moses a man with a disability. Moses had a problem speaking yet God chose him to do what? To claim (or speak) the very Word of God to Pharaoh and to the children of Israel, yet he was a man who could not speak well (a disability). Did God know it? Of course God knew it, but God knew that with him Moses could do anything... and so can you! God wants us to overcome all our limitations, many times we limit ourselves. But when we bring God in, there is no limit to what God can do through us! All things become possible. I also love what God asked Moses: The LORD said to him in Exodus 4:2 - , "What is that in your hand?" Moses answered, "A rod." And then later the Lord tells Moses the following: Exodus 4:17 - And you shall take in your hand this rod, with which you shall do the signs." Well since we are not Moses and have no rods today, as filmmakers our rods are our films (script, camera, talent)... so this is how it would read to us: "And you shall take these films (or talents) that you have, with which you shall show in theaters, churches and the world as a sign." Basically, through Moses God is showing us that we will be able to do great and mighty miracles with the very thing we may have in our hands... Moses had a rod, now, I ask you... What do you have that God has already given you? $10. dollars to your name?, a car?, a bible? how about talent?... a script or a DV camera perhaps? This is what God is telling us Christian movie makers today: "Use whatever you have right now, to rebuild my Kingdom on earth (a Kingdom that was once lost through Adam in Genesis, but was later regained through Jesus Christ), use whatever I have given you and use it as a mighty weapon that I may bless you with... beyond your wildest dreams! The rest is up to us. The ball in "always" on our court. So, make a movie, a TV program, a play, or produce a new song for Christ. Do whatever God has placed in your heart to do. Listen, do not put it off any longer. God needs us all working double time, there is a lot of work to be done (now more than ever) and when we all do our part we are advancing The Kingdom of God on earth faster than we can think or imagine. And guess what? If we don't do it, God will find someone else to do it. You are an important part of God's plan on earth. Don't let anyone or anything stop you from following God's awesome plan for you. Trust Him like we've done. Sure there's going to be obstacles, oppositions, but obstacles and oppositions are there to make your journey more fun and exciting. Start seeing your obstacles or weaknesses as part of the challenges ahead. At times you may face some fears and discouragements along the way (these things are not from God) but DO NOT let anything stop you. In fact, when you face fears and discouragements... that means you are on the right track and you must press on giving the devil double for his trouble. This is what God says about the fears and challenges you will face on your journey:
Joshua 1:9 So, do we need more proof? How long would it take for us to believe and understand that God is with Us and for Us. We are talking about the one true God, the GOD who created the Universe; creator of heaven and earth. Can you picture HIM in your mind... He is THE GREATEST!. He is your friend and partner, walk by faith... you know what walking by faith means? It means to walk without any fear. My God is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords... and you are HIS precious child. Can you imagine the POWER that has been given to you? The power that goes with you wherever you go? And finally, before we start with the 10 easy steps on Making Movies by Faith, I like to include something the Lord placed in my heart some time ago while in prayer. The Lord placed in my heart something that has truly amazed me, and I believe the Lord would like me to pass it on to you (the reader): While I was in prayer the Lord said: "This generation is a privileged generation." So I asked the Lord... why Lord? and this is what the Lord answered: Every invention that has been created... has been created for this generation... the car, the plane, the jet, electricity, the light bulb, radio, the cell phone, satellite, television, Motion Pictures, video, the computer, the Internet..... (notice how all these inventions improve communication in one way or another.) This era has been called the era of communications. Then the Lord quickly reminded me: "Jesus had nothing (none of these inventions), and neither did the apostles and look how much they accomplished with nothing... and they changed the world for me." When the Lord revealed this truth to me, I was amazed and broken. I had never thought of it that way until the Lord brought it to my attention. But the Lord is correct. I now believe that this generation (us) will be judged in a greater scale, because there are truly no excuses. God has provided us with all kinds of great and powerful inventions to help us spread the Gospel (God's one and only vision) around the world in a faster and more effective way than ever before. Not once, or twice, but we have the ability to spread the Gospel a million times around the world...in a matter of seconds. Yet, what are we doing? What have we done? Are we really doing enough? Think about it "This generation is a privileged generation." Please don't take it for granted, use everything the Lord has given you to spread the Gospel in many creative ways. Think about it, Jesus never left Israel and the apostles did everything they could by foot... traveling thousand of miles inside Israel and abroad, and look how much they were able to accomplish without any of the inventions we all take for granted today. Yes, we are truly a privileged generation. We have been given everything... and that also shows us how much the Lord loves us and how important is this generation to Him. I hope this shows you the heart of God and how important you are to him. God not only needs you, but he wants you. But first, we must repent! so we may become the man or woman that God wants us to fully become through faith. You are not alone. God is with you and he will take you by the hand... step by step... Day by Day and as you trust and have faith in Him the Lord will reveal His divine plan to you. I don't know where you are today or what vision the Lord has given you, but one thing I know for sure; whatever desire He has placed in your heart, it's for this time, season and generation. Let's Make A Movie by Faith 1. THE SCRIPT
The first step in making any movie is by writing a movie script. The good news is that it costs "northing" to write a script, all you need is a pencil, paper, and if you own a computer .. then use the computer to write the script. You may start with a short film; write a short simple 10 -15 minute script. The rule of thumb is that one page (=) equals a production minute of movie. So basically a 10 page script should basically give you about 10 minutes of produced film (more or less). As a Christian film maker you may like to start with a short film based on a Bible theme (if you like). How about turning a Bible verse into a contemporary short film?, I know of many Christian filmmakers who have done this very successfully. Be creative in your writing and at this early stage do not worry about script formats, just write your script just as if you were writing a letter to a friend. The idea is to keep it simple. Don't worry about anything... just write and have fun with it. Yes, it's that simple. The hardest part of filmmaking or writing a script... is getting started. Important Note: I always recommend film makers to produce short films that are at least 30 minutes in length. Only because the Christian Television market is in desperate need of programming, and short films under 30 minutes (or 28:30 min for cable TV) do not fit a normal TV schedule. Television programming only allows programming that is 30 or 60 minutes in length. Besides, a video product on DVD should also be no less than 30 minutes in length. This means that you should write short films that are at least 30 pages long. Unless, you are making the short film for a church or for placing on youtube.com or Godtube.com Nevertheless, short films 5 to 10 minute long are always fun to make and are a good training ground to get your feet wet in movie production. Also think about it, you only need to write in the well established Hollywood screenplay format when you are writing for Hollywood or when you plan to sell your script to a production company or a producer, but since you are writing for God instead, you don't need a format (at least not at this time), all you need is a basic story on paper. Also you don't need to write in the Hollywood format when you are producing the film yourself. Here you are not trying to impress anybody, you just want to make your film. The Hollywood format is just a format that Hollywood has developed through the years. And yes, of course its good for you to learn it at one point. But, if you get too caught up in the techniques of writing a proper screenplay, this may complicate things for you and even keep you from actually writing the story. Again, keep it simple. The idea is to get words on a page so you may not forget the story later. You can always polish your script later or even convert it to the Hollywood format when you have more experience. Agin, the key here is to write whatever ideas the Lord places in your heart. And remember, never try to make the movie you want to make, only make the ones that God wants made. Why? Because HIS films succeed and never fail. When looking for film ideas, pray, seek the Lord, and then write what the Lord places in your heart. Always remember that every story MUST have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Once your short movie idea is on paper (a script) you are ready to look for the actors who will play the different parts in your film. Don't worry about who will be your film crew... that comes later in the game. If you are going to worry, just worry about starting and finishing your story... that's the most important part of making any movie. Without a story there is no movie. If you would still like to learn how to write in the basic Hollywood script format, just visit www.Amazon.com and search the work screenplay. There are many books on the subject. Also, there are a few software programs that will also help you write a screenplay... check them out too.
2. THE ACTORS
Once your 10, 15 or 30 minute script is completed you are ready to cast your actors for your film. When you are producing a no-budget movie by faith, you have no other choice than to start by casting family and friends. You may also want to look for experience actors in your local church too. You may not know any good Christian actors, but as you start to ask around you will soon learn that God already had the cast for your movie beforehand, this is faith, knowing that God has already seen your film even before you've shot it. The casting has a very simple process. 1st) you choose a date, 2nd) choose a location for your casting, and 3rd) invite everyone you know that would like to give acting a shot. As a location, you may select an office or you may even select your own living room to do the casting. We have personally rented hotel rooms and AV/Media rooms at hotels to do our casting. Hotels are more costly to rent but they provide a more professional environment for your casting (if required). But, you may only rent a hotel room for your casting if you have some kind of budget. The rental is usually $250. for the day. But again, if you don't have a budget find a free alternative. You will need a location with at least two rooms, one room will become a waiting are for actors who are waiting to be cast, and the other room to actually cast your actors. Bring with you a couple of scenes for them to read and to act them out. Have scenes for both male and female parts, include children and teens too (just in case), you never who would be needed as extra actors or extras in your film. It is very important that you video tape your actors in the casting process. If you don't own a video camera just borrow one from a family member or a friend, this camera doesn't need to be digital, it could be any old VHS camera. You can buy a cheap VHS camera at most any garage sale for $5-$10. All you need is to record all the actors who show up at the casting. Tape them while acting their parts, one at a time. Don't forget to have a microphone to record sound and/or have the on camera microphone on. This VHS video will be used later throughout your film making process, especially when more actors are needed, you can always go back to the casting video-tape and select more actors if requried. Don't forget to label the VHS and to keep it on a safe place. Something we like to do with our casting video, is to transfer all my casting video to my computer then make still pictures of all the actors and print them on one page. This allows me to find actors by just looking at this one page. We like to keep everything organized on a three ring binder. We keep everything organized about our film on a three ring binder (starting with the script), the rest we place in clear plastic binder pockets.
This way, I can look at all my actors at a glance and see who has been used on the film and who hasn't. Anyone who owns a computer with Windows XP should be able to grab stills from a video source (More on how to capture video with a computer later) If you don't know how to do this, find a friend who can. Remember, any time you get stuck with any part of the movie production process, just ask for help, talk to family and friends and you will soon discover that they know somebody that knows somebody... and that's how God will send you everyone or everything you will need for your project. Again, always ask around. God has it all figured out! As a film producer you also need to learn to delegate your work to others. If you get stuck in any area of the production process find a relative or a friend who can help you. Don't ever expect to do everything yourself. But of course, you need to find or select only those who share your God-given-vision, if they don't have the vision, do not use them or contact them. You need to find like minded Christians to work with. And be very careful, don't ever hire or bring a secular producer or director to control God's project. Word of warning You may say, but its just a film, why can't I hire a secular producer/director to help me. The answer is simple, God is Holy. His films are also Holy and God has entrusted this Holy Vision to you and to you only, and you must be very careful who you bring into your production. My experience has been, that when you bring a secular producer in, their ideas will NEVER line up with the word of God... and how could it? Is not that we are religious people or that we are more holy than anyone, that's not the problem, the truth is that GOD IS HOLY and we have to protect Gods Holy work. Your God given film is a Holy tabernacle, so when we make a film for God we are basically rebuilding God's Tabernacle in the film industry. Once you see the vision in this light, you will soon understand the importance of protecting God's Holy property from those who are not walking right with God. If you don't believe me, try it yourself, write something for God and give it to a secular person and see how quickly they will start changing your script. They will start questioning things and eventually they will even try to delete the name of Jesus, prayer and many other things that God has told you to add. Remember, as Christian filmmakers are thoughts are not secular in nature any longer, we've been transform in the image of God and we now have the Mind of Christ, a secular person has no other choice than to think secular and so when this happens, you have a spiritual warfare in your hands. If there is one scripture in the whole Bible that I have tested time and time again, and have found it to be true to the core is this one...
2 Corinthians 6:14 Remember brothers and sisters in Christ, we are THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Then, does that mean that we can't bring anyone who is not a believer to our Christian productions. No. I strongly believe that we may work with non-believers in our productions, but what I mean is that these individuals should never have a position of power in your productions, like those of producers and directors. This also includes using secular investors who are given the power to change the script or give their own ideas. Actors and crew members often have no say in a production or the script, so they usually won't have the power to change anything on your screenplay. You may use non-believers as actors and crew members... not a problem there, as long as they will have no say to change the script or to change any given scene. A secular producer or director will have power to change the script and the vision that God has given you. And the way they do it is very crafty, they start by changing minor things at first, but by the end of the production, a little change here and a little change there will eventually change the course of God's vision. All I say is to be careful and never allow this to happen to God's vision for your film. I experienced this myself in 1997 in a Christian film I produced with a secular producer and investor, and since I have learned my lesson and have never again allowed any non-believer to change our screenplay's vision. I often work with several producer friends who share God's vision. But even then, by the time they get the script the vision is locked down, scenes and dialogue may change, but God's general vision stays the same. And by lock down I mean, nobody has the right to change God's main vision for the film. But even to accomplish this script lock-down, you need to be a very strong Christian, a strong producer and a very strong director. If not, people will walk all over your God-given-vision and that is what God is trying to protect you from. I have worked with secular producers all my life, and secular producers are the most crafty people you will ever meet. They have the talent to change your mind and ways... so again, be very careful in who you bring in as a producer or director. Again, I would strongly suggest that you become the producer and director of all your films. And if you do not have the expertise to do this, bring in a strong Christian/producer/director. If not, you are asking for trouble. ABOUT CASTING When casting your actors look for good acting abilities (of course), a good actor can make an average film into a great film, but a bad actor, well… you can imagine the rule of thumb. Always try to find the best actors as possible (never settle for second best here) actors either have it or not. The best actors will always produce the greatest results. Tell your actors the truth, explain that you are a first time director/producer and that this film will be completely experimental, and that the only thing you can offer them is a movie credit, an invitation to the premiere of the film, and a copy of the short-film on DVD (when completed) and always put everything in writing. Most non-professional actors would like to work for a movie credit, and a copy of the finish product always comes handy since this could represent a calling card or resume for an actor, using a short film for promotional purpose is a very common practice among actors and film crews alike, the more work they have to show, the better chances of landing a bigger film or TV job. And today with YouTube.com and MySpace.com a video demo of a film is a big promotional plus for anyone involved in film making or TV productions. For this reason, in many cases even top professional actors are willing to work in small independent projects for a small fee. Nobody knows how far or how successful a short film may become and what doors the Lord may open through it. Don’t ever under estimate the anointing-power of your short film or vision, and always remember that ultimately God is the director and producer of all our films. God always gets the credit and the Glory when you work for Him. It's never about us, but about what God wants to do through us. IMPORTANT NOTE:
Again, whenever you need help or get stuck with ANY part of the production process (expect this to happen at times) don't get frustrated, this is normal... instead of getting frustrated just call on friends or relatives for help. I don't know how many times my own family or friends or a friend of the family have come through with the help or thing I needed. People that I had never known have helped me solve a ton of problems and many times they have lead me to the greatest contacts, actors, locations, props, funds, etc., etc, etc.
Bellow I have provided you with a basic idea on how God uses our contacts and other people's contacts to help HIS vision and how sometimes the Lord wants to touch someone very far away from your circle of influence. This is why we need to reach out to people outside of our circle, we need to go beyond our means and reach out to people we may not even know today.. but God knows them. Study the drawing bellow, I pray the Lord will reveal to you this awesome truth on how we can do "greater things for God".
In other words, if you think right now that something is too hard or maybe even impossible to do, its probably because your vision is too limited. You may be limiting yourself to only those contacts who are known around you. But if you dare to ask, and dare seek and believe, and dare to knock on doors beyond your own contacts, you will soon discover others who do have what you need. You need to learn that to succeed with God's vision you will always be required to go beyond your limits and beyond your means.
Here is another revelation the Lord gave us a while back: The satellite was invented not because we conquered the moon, but because we dared to travel beyond our planet. Conquering the moon was just men's motivating factor... what they learn in the process brought us the greatest inventions of the 21st Century, inventions such as the computer, satellites, microwaves, digital communication, and many more wonderful inventions. God wanted man to travel outside their limits so they would discover things they never knew or couldn't even imagine. It's the same with any project, as you move forward...as you walk by faith, greater things will be revealed to you as you do your part. But if you don't move forward or beyond your means, I assure you that nothing will happen.
Notice on the drawing bellow, see how we may be in the very center of our circle (blue circle) of contacts or influence. But notice how God uses other people's contacts (family, friends and friend of friends) and their influence to reach others around them that God has waiting on you to bless you!... and to bless others through His vision. In the drawing bellow, see how far is the persons in Red. He may desire to reach (the red circles) from your circle of contacts. The making of your movie will be the excuse God will use to reach those far away from your circle of contacts, not necessary to save them since they may already be Christians, but to use them in a moment in time for His Glory.
As a Christian film producer you have to think outside the box, and outside of your circle of influence. Usually the people that are around you (family and friends) may not necessary share or understand your God-given-vision. So you need to search for those who do share the vision and who are willing to also run the race with you. This is why www.ChristianFilmmaker.com was created, so we may meet and communicate with those who share our visions and dreams of Movie Making for God.
Drawing of our circle of influence
Its always a good idea to start by sharing the vision of your film to family and friends, then ask them to help you contact others who may be interested in being part of the film. I assure you that those you don't even know today may be the people who God will use to bless your film. Believe it or not, these people have been hidden from you... waiting on your first step of faith. And this is why God asks us to walk by faith. Notice how it says WALK and not SIT DOWN by faith. No. we need to take action and walk. In other words, nothing will be handed to us in a silver platter.
Who would have known that the invention of the Satellite was hidden in the moon's mission? The only way to place a Satellite in space is by the invention of a rocket, and what propelled the invention of the rocked was the mission of conquering the moon. It's the same concept. As you move forward by faith to make your film a reality, God will start to open doors you never knew existed. Faith is not just believing in something, faith is a powerful Kingdom concept that works!.
Ask, Seek, Knock.... to our circle of contacts (or influence)
Matthew 7:7
(Whole Chapter)
So whenever you are lost or confused about anything...or you are lacking anything to do God's vision, just start asking for help, start knocking on new doors and see what the Lord will do. The Lord doesn't expect us to work alone... in fact, we can't. We all need each other. So when you need anything...don't be afraid to ask! We tend to keep everything to ourselves and that is not of God.
When making ministry films for the Lord you will soon discover that asking for help or assistance to family members and friends is the key to your success and the success of any ministry project. And as you've seen on the drawing above, God wants you do go beyond your means, because there are people out there far beyond your knowledge or comprehension that God wants to use for His benefit or he may just want to touch. And who knows, you may be that very person that God will use to spark a dream or vision in some else's life. The fact is that people like to be involved or be part of a big vision...and making a movie is definitely a BIG VISION...don't you think?
Before you start production, it's a good idea to find at least two good friends or relatives that you know and trust that would be willing to stay with you to the end. These people will be your prayer partners and helpers in the production process of your film. These same individuals are the ones you will call on in times of trouble or when you get discouraged or frustrated for whatever reason. When you call on this team you know you will receive motivation and encouragement in times of need and they will help you get up and walk by faith again. Yes, making films can be very stressful at times, but when you have God on your side and a good team of brothers and sisters (believers) behind you, it can be fun and very rewarding. There is no greater reward than making films for God!
3. THE CREW
Once you have cast your actors then you are ready to find a production crew (of course). Without a production crew, how can anyone shoot a film. Don't worry, you don't need to be an expert to shoot a film, but you do need to find one. There are several ways to find a low budget or no-budget crew: If you plan to be the director and producer (and I encourage you to be both), the other two most important crew members you will need to make your short film a reality is a good camera person (cameraman or camerawoman) and a good sound person (for sound recording). And if you have the experience to do your own camera work, then you may decide to do the camera work yourself. Being the director/producer/camera person is not recommended since you will be already wearing too many hats as a producer and as director. Nevertheless, if you are an excellent camera person, then I would encourage you to do it all. In most all of our films, I have been the producer, director, and cameraman. The good thing about being all of the above is that you have total control of the entire look, feel, and vision of your film. Perhaps, you don't own a DV (Digital Video) camera (perhaps this is a reality for you). If that's your case, don't be discouraged... the best way to find a video camera is to borrow one, again through family members or friends who may already own a DV camera. And if you don't have the skills to do camera work, then it would be wise to use a "real" camera person who is knowledgeable on how to shoot and light with a DV camera (more on DV cameras later). · The camera person will need to know “How to frame a subject or subjects properly”. · He or she must make sure that every scene is in perfect focus. · They will need to know how to light a scene. · Make sure the camera is sturdy at all times. Using a tripod is a good idea since a shaky camera will ruin most any movie…unless you are using the shaky cam for special effects. · Basically, if your camera person can properly frame a subject and focus the image for every given scene you have a great chance of making a fairly good first movie. But as a cameraman myself, I would always recommend you use someone with the talents to shoot and light great videos. A special note about your crew: Always respect your crew and feed them properly by providing a basic breakfast, lunch, and dinner (Depending on your shooting schedules). Also have plenty of water, sodas and ice in a cooler at all times. It doesn't take much to feed your crew and you can find people to donate food for a movie credit. It's not that hard to find sponsors among local restaurants that are willing to provide lunch or dinner to a small crew for a movie credit. Use your movie credits at the end of your film in a creative way so that you can find free food or donations for your film. Everyone loves to be involved in a movie, no matter how big or small. Remember, everyone loves the movies and making movies is a rewarding experience for everyone involved. This is why many secular film makers spend thousands and even millions to make useless films that never reach Hollywood. Yet, we as Christian filmmakers have a greater motive and desire; there is nothing like working for HIS Kingdom and Glory! And last but not least, never overwork your crew, especially when they are not getting paid. An 8hr day should be more than enough. If you keep going over-time, eventually you will loose most of your crew and most likely most of your actors too. I've seen this happen to other filmmakers who have not been careful. IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY your crew THEIR FULL RATE + O.T. then you can go over a few hours if needed. But again, on a no-budget film, you should NEVER overwork the crew. Don't ever forget that the only reason the Cast and Crew are there working with you on a no-budget film is because of God's mercy and love. Count it a miracle when you find a cast and crew among family and friends motivated only by your vision and your trust. As Jesus would say... Love your crew! If you take good care of your crew, they will take good care of you and they will be with you to the end if needed. I have never been able to make a film alone, I don't know of anyone that has or can, even Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi) had many (unseen or un credited) helping hands behind the scenes.. I've noticed that things start to happen when I team up with at least one other individual who shares my film's vision and goal. Teaming up with like-minded Christians is a must, they must love the vision just as much as you do. I encourage you to find your right-hand man (or woman) who will help you through the production process of your film and you will see how things will begin to happen. In my most resent film {Violent Love) a film against domestic violence, I found my right hand person at my local church. The Lord sent me a Christian lady who knew nothing about film making but she was ready to learn it all....and she did. Her name is "Rosy Molina". Rosy has been a blessing from God. In production, she was the one who called all the actors and crew members for me, she also helped me organize all the contracts and releases, find locations and props, and she was always there covering my back throughout the entire production process. And to top it all... Rosy was our prayer warrior too. And that's not all, her husband "Hector" became our sound person and when the movie was completed they helped me go from church to church to show the film, so far (Dec 22, 2005) we have shown Amor Violento in over 30 churches. I pray Rosy would be an encouragement to you. She is living prove that you don't need experts, all you need are willing vessels that God will send your way. What I would like you to understand is that all the fears you may have or the doubts about making your first film...are not real, it's all a lie from the enemy. Let me explain: Imagine a God that before you were born he knew the films you were going make, so he provided everything you would need "beforehand" so you would be able to do everything you set your mind to. The Good News is that this is a fact. It's the truth. We do have such a God! and He has provided such a plan beforehand for each and everyone of us who He has chosen to make films for Him. And God doesn't make mistakes. Amen! As Christian Filmmakers we must understand that God has done everything in his power so we may succeed and NEVER FAIL. Just believe it and go forth! Nothing can truly stop you... well... perhaps there is only one who can stop you and that is.....yourself. That's exactly why we are never to trust our instincts of fear, but to trust only God. Make films without fear, without doubt, and you will see how God will back you up 100%. In over 20 years, He has never failed me and I know He never will. Believe and walk by Faith. But what is faith? but the reality of knowing that God has provided all the safety nets we will ever need in our walk in life. So take the leap of faith...you can do it!
4. THE CAMERA
Again, in case you don’t own a DV camera. You may want to borrow a low cost palm camera (miniDV format) from a family member or a friend to shoot your first movie with. A miniDV camera is a must when making any short film today because miniDV has a better quality than the old VHS, S-VHS or Hi-8 formats. Today, anyone can edit a video or movie on their own home computer. (More on editing later) So, again, if you don't own a DV camera borrow one, you will be surprised at how many individuals own DV cameras today and how many are willing to lend it to you for a good cause. Just take good care of it. :-) You will soon discover that God's vision imbedded in your film will be the motivating factor that propels the favor of God upon you....just like the children of Israel found favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, you too will find favor because by producing a Christian film you are doing God's work and ministry. Exodus 11:3 "And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. furthermore, the man Moses was greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, both in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and in the sight of the people. This is why it's so important to seek God first about the film story HE wants made, it's always HIS story and never yours... your reward is not in the film or the story itself, but in the many blessings that follows the movie project as thousands are touched by it. God will always reward you for being obedient to HIS call. What camera to borrow or buy? MiniDV is the standard Video Digital format in the consumer market today, while HDV and/or HD (Hi Definition) has become the professional digital video format in today's pro-DV market. We at ChristianFilmmaker.com own the Panasonic AG-HVX 200
Panasonic AG-HVX 200 (24p) The future (at least for now) is HD production, but MiniDV (consumer format) may still be around for while since for HD to work, most households in the US need to convert to HD Television sets. This is going to take a while, so meanwhile, I suggest you practice with DV. Unless you are serious about producing your next Hollywood feature film to be distributed by Hollywood distributors, in that case, I would shoot HD without a doubt since at this stage of the game most Hollywood distributors are seeking after HD films. Reason being is that HD video quality is at least 50% better than DV. The nice thing about miniDV is that it’s completely digital and it provides a better Digital image quality than the VHS, S-VHS, Hi 8, or 8mm video cameras of the past. miniDV is all digital and it stays digital all through the production and editing process without loosing much quality. Just make sure the DV camcorder you use has a firewire or IEEE 1394 connector output since this is the connection you will use to transfer your DV footage from the DV camera to your computer for editing purposes (more on editing DV later).
Note: Most professional videographers or DV makers own a miniDV camera or better yet an HDV or HD camera already, so, it would be wise to bring in a good experienced camera person who may already own a DV camera. You should be able to find a good videographer or DVmaker in your own church, if you can't find one at your church then look around in other churches. Most every church today has a TV production ministry dept. You have a 100% chance to find a good DVmaker at most any church today. So, start looking. If you are looking to buy the best miniDV Camcorder at the lowest-price in the market today, visit: www.ebay.com You should be able to find a low-cost DV camera for as little as $150.
5. AUDIO RECORDING
Never take audio recording lightly, if you do... your film will surely end up with poor audio quality. Audio is as important as the video image, so always take “extreme care" when recording the actor's dialogue on studio or location. There is only one sure way to get good audio and that’s by using a professional sound person with a good shotgun and/or boom microphone. A shotgun or boom microphone is a very special omni directional microphone created strictly for studio or location sound recording. A shotgun microphone only receives the audio frequency that comes from the area the microphone is directed or pointed to. This helps eliminate any unwanted ambiance noise in any given location and it helps to record good clean dialogue from your actors. The shotgun microphone works best when it is directed slightly above an actor or group of actors. The shotgun microphone should be placed just about one foot (1’) or so away from the subject or subjects who are delivering their lines. You may need to purchase a shotgun microphone before you shoot your short film. I would never shoot a frame of film, HD or DV unless I knew I had a good shotgun microphone on the set. A good shotgun microphone may cost anywhere from $200 to $400. Again, search the word shotgun microphone on www.Ebay.com and you should be able to find a very inexpensive microphone there. Either way, this is an expense you can’t do without. Another alternative is to rent one. You may be able to rent one from a production rental house in your area. But if you are serious about making movies I would advice you on buying your own. Again, you don't have to use your own money to buy it, you can have someone donate it for the film. Start working towards owning a good shot-gun microphone if you are serious about making any movie. The shot-gun microphone should be mounted on a professional microphone pole. In (very low budget productions) I've seen filmmakers use anything from broom sticks, pvc pipes, or a painter's paint-pole (the painter's pole have worked the best) you may get one at any Home Depot or the like. A professional shotgun microphone connects to a broadcast camera by way of an XLR connection, while most small DV palm cameras have a mini audio plug connection-input for audio recording. You may need to purchase an adapter to convert the XLR connection to mini plug or better yet, you may purchase an audio cable with a female XLR on one end and a mini plug on the other. This way, you will be able to connect a professional microphones to your DV palm camera. In the real world, most professional sound persons use a small portable mixer in between the camera and the shotgun microphone, this allows them to properly adjust the audio levels before entering the DV camera recorder. This is the ideal way to do it, but again, if you don't have the budget, try going direct to camera, but always monitor the audio coming in with a set of ear phones. Always monitor your audio coming into the DV camera with a pair of ear phones. WARNING Never use the on-camera microphone to record audio, that's the worst audio-mistake any film maker can make. The on camera microphones or microphone mounted on the camera or built in the camera are designed for ambient sound recording only and NOT for recording dialogue. Always use a shotgun microphone when recording any kind of dialogue for your film.
6. PROPS
"The Sword of the Spirit" Make sure you have all your props in order before the production is scheduled to start. Props can be anything from a fake gun, sword, helmet, shield, a dinner plate, a flash light, a coffee cup, in other words anything an actor will need to use for his or her scene. All the props need to be ready and available before you start shooting the film. This will help save time and money. It's a good idea to write a film based on things you already have or things you know that family and friend have. This will make things easier for you. For example, if you need a machine gun for a scene, but you don't know who owns one or where to get it, then just change the script and use a weapon you know you have access to. It's a good idea to also work in producing the smaller films first while you wait on God to provide the millions for the big film. If you think about it and when it comes down to it, God sees both films alike, for Him both films have the same weight and vision. Remember, God doesn't measure the importance of films the way Hollywood measures them. Sometimes we think that all our films must be as big as Hollywood's and we see them going around the whole world, but God may also call you to make a film that will only touch your unsaved next door neighbor. God is in a class all by himself and I am so thankful for that. God may have allowed man to created Hollywood but HE is not Hollywood. His ways are not are not our ways.
7. LOCATION
When producing no-budget films you should stay away from government or private own locations since all these will require insurance and special permits. Again, try using locations that you have access to, especially locations own by family and friends. These locations will cost you nothing, so use them whenever possible. If you keep your cast & crew to a bare minimum (4 or 5 people), you may be able to shoot in many locations without the need of permits since using a small palm-camera shows that you are making a home-movie and not a major Hollywood production.
8. EDITING
It has become very easy to edit digital video (DV) today. Most any computer built with a Pentium 4 technology, Windows XP (OS), 500mb RAM, and a 100 Gig hard drive can edit DV (Digital Video). In fact, Microsoft has incorporated a built-in editing software in every Windows XP operating systems, a lot of people don’t know this. You can find the Windows Movie Maker editing program under the START menu or under the Accessories menu. To edit your short film on your computer, you must be able to transfer your DV data (Digital Video footage) from the miniDV camera to the computer’s hard drive. This is done by way of a firewire cable or better known as the IEEE 1394 cable connector and capture card. The DV camera as well as the computer should contain a IEEE 1394/ firewire cable. Firewire cables are available in two types of connectors; the most common 4pin connector and the 6pin connector. MiniDV cameras usually have the 4-pin connector while a computer tower may have the 6-pin connector. Some laptops are now built with a 4-pin IEEE 1394/ firewire connector. Today laptops have become very popular for editing DV or even HD on the go.
To transfer DV video to your computer, your computer MUST have a firewire or IEEE 1394 capture card. Most new computers are already providing firewire or IEEE 1394 jacks on the back of computers, but if your computer doesn’t have a firewire capture card, you will need to purchase a low cost firewire or IEEE 1394 capture card. You can purchase one from www.videoguys.com or most any major computer store. There are several great editing software in the market. If you are going Mac Final Cut Pro editing software and If you have a PC then I recommend Adobe Premiere Pro. These two NLE editing software systems are the most commonly used in the independent movie making market.
9. MUSIC SCORE
Once your short film is shot and edited, the next step is adding some background music (Music Score). You may be able to find a good musician at your local church. My secular TV production teacher always used to say that the best musicians are found in churches. Find a musician from your local church or find someone (a man or woman of faith) to help you compose the proper music required for your short film. You will be surprise at how many Christians love to write, produce, and perform their own (God-given) music. Most anyone... special amateurs will love to write music or make music for a film.
10. THE PREMIERE of your FILM
The reality of life is that everyone likes to be part of a movie. You will soon find out that most everyone is willing to help out…even free of charge. Why? Again, because making movies is truly fun and very rewarding, especially when it’s time to premiere your masterpiece. There is a great sense of accomplishment and excitement when you finally get to see your finish film up on the silver screen. Yet there is something even more rewarding; seeing the unsaved coming to Christ because your humble film made a difference in their life. Making Films by Faith Remember, every step of making a Christian film is done by Faith. How do you walk by faith or make films by faith? You take one step at a time and you do this without fear or worry. I thank our Lord Jesus Christ everyday for giving us in His Word the following scripture: "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious (do not worry) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?.... When I discovered the truth that Jesus himself has told us NOT TO WORRY, it changed my way of thinking and every time I start to worry about anything.... I stop and say: "Wait a minute, Lord you said in your Word that I shouldn't worry, so I will not worry". At that moment I know in my mind and heart that Jesus took all my worries and fears on the Cross, so I'm motivated and moved by the Spirit knowing that all things are possible with God. When you start doing this on a daily basis, you will soon learn to overcome one of the greatest and most powerful weapons the enemy has "tried to" forged against us. Fear and worry are two powerful ingredients that could stop us in our tracks and the enemy knows it. Fear and worry is something that comes from the enemy "if" we let it. This is why every time we have negative thoughts we need to stop and confront them and learn to turn every negative thought into a positive thought and start thinking with the mind of Christ. If you think about it, fear and worry may currently be what has been stopping you from becoming all that God wants you to be 4Him. Also don't be led to believe that lack of money is the reason you can't make a movie. That's a lie from the enemy. We have destroyed this myth and lie by making films against all odds. We are a living testimony that you can make films for God even when there are no funds available, because in reality.... it's not by our own power or strength that God has called us to make films but by His Spirit I have envisioned a heavenly sent full-crew working around us everyday. God has creative angels around us constantly working with us and for us. It's true. The Lord has given me a vision of this, don't ever think you are working alone in making your film. Even if you are alone, think of the thousands of angels the Lord has already assigned to you. These creative angels are ready to act upon your command (the Word of God). They were designed and created just to help you in your vision, which by the way, it’s not yours but God’s. Don't you think that God would protect his own vision? Think about it. How many angels did satan take down with him? Only one third, right! Do the math. If satan can do so much damage with only one third of his fallen kingdom…. How much more can God do with His powerful two thirds? Think of the invisible power that’s around you on a daily basis. Yet, it is sad to see that so many Christian filmmakers get so discouraged or don’t do anything… when God is constantly telling them.... "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." My own personal theory on movie making: My theory on movie making is that we should all be making all kinds of Christian films both Big and Small films. My theory is that we should all have two types of Christian films in the works. One that you can shoot for a low budget or no-budget at, and then have this other big film which we call the Noah's Ark project (because its a big film project) that may take three to five years to produce with a 5 to 10 million budget. The key is not to limit ourselves, but we should never get stuck either.... specially while waiting to make the big movies. I see too many filmmakers getting stuck in this one BIG Hollywood type Christian film, and time goes by, and years go by fast, and the big movie takes a while to make... but meanwhile they are not doing anything else. They have all this talent on hold or are waiting all those years for their film dream to materialize. That's why we like to have our big films in the works, but meanwhile, we are not waiting on anything, we keep producing these other smaller films as the Lord works on blessings us with the BIG projects. One thing that bothers me the most is when I hear Christian filmmakers knocking down those who are making smaller films... I really don't understand why. I guess they think that God pays more attention to them if the make bigger films or reach more people is the films are huge. I don't believe it. God sees every film the same way. He can use a small film just as much as He can a BIG film. The way I see it, and based on Biblical principals, God loves every films Big or Small. So, to HIM all films are important. And if you don't believe me. Check www.YouTube.com and see how many thousands and even millions of viewers are watching these little short films on the web. Unfortunately many are secular short films, but what if Christian filmmakers produce smaller films for www.youtube.com or www.myspace.com and the many other soon to come out video sites on the web. Can you imagine how many lives we can impact with a small film on www.youtube.com ? So please, don't get stuck on the size of your film production, the fact is that we are all important in God's Kingdom, we are all called to make films not to judge those who make big or smaller films. Now, think about the many Christian filmmakers who are stuck not making any films because they keep waiting to make this one great big film for God. Menwhile time is going by, and they don't make any other films. This truly hurts me the most. I rather see a Christian filmmaker making ANY film for God, rather than just doing nothing and seeing his or her talent, DV camera and editing computer gathering dust (if you will). Honestly, to me, that's got to be a sin. Do not fall into this trap, make movies against all odds!!! A film is a film, big or small God loves them all. In fact, knowing God and the way He is, He may love the little films greater than the big ones. No. I'm not against making Christian Hollywood big type films for God, we too are called to make those kinds of big films. But we understand that there is a time and a season for every film, one film may take a year to produce while others may take 5 or 10 years or more to produce. This is also the reality for secular Hollywood films, did you know that most of Hollywood films take no less than 10 years to make. So, what I'm saying is, instead of just waiting for your screenplay to be produced, DO NOT STAY IDLE. Go and make smaller films as you wait, this will be a blessing for the Kingdom too, but best of all, you will not get frustrated in the process. ________________________________________________________ For those who may wonder about the stage that we are in as Christian Filmmakers and with our film budgets: In producing our films, we are not at the million $ level just yet per film. Our film budgets are under $100,000. per film (this is about the norm for most indie filmmakers today), and currently we are financing and distributing the films ourselves. This low-budget allows us to produce at least one or two Christian films per year and we rather produce than wait for the Millions to roll in. We've waited too long (sometimes 5 and even 7 years between films) but that's not the case anymore.
We believe that God is more interested in quantity rather than quality when it comes to first time filmmakers. But if you are an experienced filmmaker then you should always aim for the best top-quality. And if you are just starting out as a Christian filmmaker then your goal should be to make all kinds of films, not worrying weather you need to shoot on 35mm or HD. If you are starting out, just try to make as many movies as you can, including short films, because each movie will make you a better filmmaker and in do time you will have the experience to go for the the Big Theatrical films. Then you will be able to tackle the HD or 35mm feature films.
The secular film community produces a ton of films and programs per year, and most of it is trash anyways. We as Christians should produce a ton of work too, the good, the bad and the ugly (in fact that's how we all learn, we learn from doing and by making mistakes) Bottom line, if we don't produce frequently, we learn nothing. And how can doing nothing help to spread the Gospel? But if we produce all kinds of Christian productions, then we learn and become better with each project. Only that in our case, if we proclaim the Word of God in all our work... it's all GOOD no matter what we produce. The key is not to stay idle. Staying idle waiting for the money to come doesn't work, we've tried that. And you know why it doesn't work? because if you have the money, then you don't need faith to accomplish the work, and God wants to teach us to walk by faith. Staying idle is the worst thing that anyone can do, and I assure you that God hates it. God wants us to produce and create (just as God is a creator and producer) with whatever He has given us, just like in the case of the parable of the Ten Talents. Is not the size of the budget that matters... but it's what you do with the little you have that shows God the level of faith that you have. I have learned that God is continually testing our faith. I truly believe that He enjoys it when we move forward against all the odds, he loves it when we try the impossible because HE IS THE GOD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE.
And thanks to the talents the Lord has given us, we too move forward by faith, knowing that He is on our side; He is our provider, our investor, producer, director and everything else. And to be honest, we've reached the breakthrough point where we can do more with less and God's mighty hand than with millions. Bible History has shown us that The God of the Bible has always done more with less than with much. All the battles that have been fought and won by God's people, has always been won with less men, less weapons, less equipment and less territory. It is a known fact, that God can do more with less than with much, because that's how He shows His power, His mercy, and His Love here on earth.
Thanks to this truth, the Lord has allowed us to have the freedom to produce more projects without any restrictions or limitations. When the Lord revealed this to us, I prayed the following prayer:
"Lord today I declare before heaven and earth that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and also, today I remove all the obstacles, limitations, and the fears from my mind and will move forward from this day forward by faith and by your Spirit and never again by my own strength or limited thinking."
I know that something happened in heaven when I prayed that prayer, because God has done great and mighty things after that. It is not I, but the God in me who gives us everything we need or ask to make all things possible... yes, even films.
That's exactly how the first Tabernacle build by Moses was accomplished, everyone worked and gave freely to build Gods House on earth without any restrictions or limitations. And I've said it before, when we produce a Christian film we are rebuilding the Temple of God, because when you make a film according to Gods order and principle, you are actually building a Tabernacle for God on celluloid or in digital form.
The more you follow God's order of things in making your movie, the greater the level of anointing power your film will have. In today's language, if you want God to be in the house, you need to built it according to God's way of doing things.
Brothers and sisters, from this day forward see your films as a huge Tabernacle built for the Glory of God. And the Good news is that; if you study the scriptures...God has always blessed those who built or re-built His Tabernacle on earth. Think about that.
We hear it so much, and we know it, but the problem is that we don't believe that God can do all things. And how can we show God that we do believe Him? We show him... when you take action and become unstoppable for the Kingdom of God, and for a Christian filmmaker is to have built His Tabernacle on earth... a film.
Joshua 1:9 The following is a scripture that has really touched my life and has given me the reason to make films for something greater than Hollywood… making films for the Kingdom of God. Matthew 4:16 "the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." I truly believe the scripture above talks about movie theaters and how the people who sit in darkness (like in a movie theater), have seen a great light (the light of God projected on the Silver Screen by means of a Film or Digital projector); including the light that reflects outwardly from the silver screen. When this light (from a projected Christian film) is pure and holy, it dawns light (or revelation) on the shadows of those who sit in darkness (the un-churched or un-saved), and when this happens... the darkness must flee. This scripture comes to pass every time a Christian Film like THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is shown in theaters throughout the world. Yet the Lord has clearly shown us that the greatest films are yet to be made. This is why God is motivating you today... to act and do whatever it takes to make your God-given dreams a reality, because YOU are the light of the world... go and make movies for HIS GLORY!
