Doing it yourself… Movie Making!

I would like to encourage Christian writers, actors, artists, photographers and musicians to start learning the art of movie making themselves. Based on what’s happening in the indie film industry everywhere, more and more writers, actors, musicians and photographers are taking charge and making their own short films.
By making their own indie-films, I mean actually shooting it and editing it themselves. This is happening everywhere. Reason being, film budgets are harder to find these days, plus HD cameras are becoming less expensive and easier to acquire, and there are tons of cost effective ways to edit HD video as well. Also cameras are becoming smaller and more low-light than ever before, which allows for less lights to be used in production, available light is sometimes more effective and realistic type of lighting, than the old 3 or 4 point lighting technique from the 1950s. Filmmakers may now use natural light and/or use less expensive lights while filming and still come up with a great film.

When Hollywood started making films in the 1900s, movie making was more like a magic trick; a secret. In the early days, only a handful of Hollywood cameramen knew how to make films. But that’s not the case anymore, thanks to the Web we are able to find all kinds of free and paid info on how to shoot, edit and distribute our own films. Besides, the more Christian writers, actors, and producers make movies, the more we are able to reach people around the world. Today, more than ever before, we all need to think outside the box and make movies with whatever camera & edit gear we are able to get our hands on. The key is not to allow another year to pass us by without making a Christian features, documentaries or short films.

Don’t wait any longer, make all kinds of films 4God.    Because while we wait and stay idle, the secular indie-filmmakers are making 100 low-budget films (and again, low budget doesn’t mean low quality), I’m a firm believer that we should ALWAYS make the best quality films we can, and with whatever gear the Lord has provided us with.    That means that if you have a VHS camera… make a video for the Lord, if you have a DV camera, make a movie the best you can…   Does the Lord wants us to think BIG?  Of course he does, but what I mean is that as we wait for the big budgets to come in, in the meantime we could be making lots of  short films, documentaries, and all kinds of Christian youtube videos.   The types of films we should make depends on the specific talent and calling of the individual filmmaker.
